High performance coatings – not necessarily on the minds of the everyday person, but something almost everyone encounters in their daily lives. Drive over a steel bridge on your early morning commute to the office? Ever wonder about the pipelines that transport oil across the country to warm our homes? Or what about the transformers that transfer electricity over long distances and into our homes so our appliances like our fridge, stove, and television work on a daily basis? The steel bridge, the pipeline, and the transformer all have one thing in common: they all (usually) have a high-performance coating.

Chemical resistant coatings are used to prevent wear and tear such as corrosion. These coatings also work to improve durability, lubrication, and scratch-resistance, in addition to promoting easy clean-up. Functions that require a simultaneously protective and consistent application while exposed to environmental and industrial chemicals would benefit from such a coating.

Industrial coatings are films added onto materials to enhance their properties such as conductivity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and so on.

In comparison to high performance coatings, paints are relatively much less costly and function differently. 

Basically, Teflon is a trademark that stands for PTFE or polytetrafluoroethylene.
