4 Popular Methods of Applying Industrial Coatings

Industrial coatings are films added onto materials to enhance their properties such as conductivity, wear resistance, corrosion resistance and so on. They are used in production plants by qualified industrial coating applicator shops to coat a wide range of materials. These include finished assemblies, discrete parts, metal sheets, piping, wood panels, tanks, and so on. There are two steps involved in the application of these coatings. The first step is to apply the resin on the substrate and to let the film form to the surface.

Industrial coating applicator uses various methods of application.

It can be any of the following techniques.

 

  • Vacuum-pressure impregnation: this method uses a vacuum to produce the pressure necessary to drive the coatings into a substrate after a trickle coating has been applied. While in vacuum application, a material to be coated is being submerged in a resin and the vacuum is then released to force the coating into its surface. Then the part is cleaned and cured.

 

  • Conventional fluidized bed coating: this is a simple dipping process wherein preheated (over the melting point of the powder) parts are dipped in the bed where the powder fuses into continuous coatings. The high transfer efficiency of this method leads to no dripping or little drag out. The other option is to do this process using a high voltage dc grid to charge the fine particles, also called as electrostatic fluidized bed coating.

 

  • Electrostatic deposition: in this method, industrial coating applicator undergo through various coating processes and utilizes electric field to charge particles and deposit them into the parts substrate, serving as the electrode. The other option to apply the coating through an electrode is by spraying it using a spray gun.

 

  • Centrifugal coating: also known as spin coating, this technique is the best way to coat small parts or flat surfaces. It is widely used in microfabrication where very thin films are required. After a part has been immersed in excess coating, a centrifugal force is then use to bleed such excess from the substrate. The result is an even thin layer of coating on the surface.
