The Different Kinds of Chemical Resistant Coatings

There are many kinds of chemical resistant coatings available in the market today. The purpose of these kinds of coatings is to provide another layer of protection for the equipment as it operates. The kinds of chemical resistant coatings are determined by the corrosive element the coating seeks to counteract.
 

Below are some of the most common types of corrosion.
 

  1. Galvanic corrosion. The kind of chemical resistant coatings that resist galvanic corrosion have the ability to negate the electrochemical charges produced by an anodized metal piece coming into contact with a cathodic metal piece. When these two metals make contact, the metal ions move from one to another resulting in the weakening of the chemical bonding in the metal. Galvanic corrosion is prevented when specialized chemical resistant coatings stop the travel of these charged particles.
     
  2. Stress corrosion. This kind of corrosion occurs when extreme tensile stress is applied to a given metal object. In essence, cracks form and these cracks make the metal piece more prone to corrosion, and eventual metal failure occurs. Chemical resistant coatings specifically help in preventing further corrosion from occurring. Moisture may seep into these micro cracks, which weakens the metal further. By coating these cracks before they become stress points, the metal is preserved and strengthened.
     
  3. Caustic Agent corrosion. This kind of corrosion occurs when a caustic agent comes into contact with the surface resulting in damage such as burning or weathering. This is often the case when gases form into droplets of moisture. Chemical resistant coatings specifically allow these droplets to slide away from the surface, thus preventing corrosion from occurring.
     

As can be seen, the type of chemical resistant coating to be used must be apt for the corrosive material present in and around the item sought protected. If the chemical resistant coatings is unable to protect the metal, then the chemical resistant coatings used is inappropriate.
